Privacy Policy

HitJam is a free browser instrument. The short version: everything you play happens on your own device, we don't ask who you are, and we'd like to keep it that way.
What we don't collect
No accounts, no sign-ups, no cookies for tracking, no forms. The sound you make is generated in your browser and never leaves your device: nothing you play is recorded, uploaded, or heard by us.
What stays on your device
Your preferences: volume, the view you picked (piano or keys), label settings, and which sidebar sections you collapsed: are saved in your browser's local storage. They never leave your browser, and clearing your browser data removes them.
Hosting
The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes basic technical request data (such as IP addresses) to deliver the pages and protect against abuse; see Cloudflare's privacy policy. We don't receive or keep our own logs of who you are.
Analytics and ads
HitJam shows no ads. It counts visits with Google Analytics, to see which pages people find useful. It loads only on hitjam.io itself: never on a developer's machine, and never for automated browsers. Traffic from the owner's own home connection is excluded.
Beyond page visits, it counts four moments, and only as anonymous totals: the first time a note sounds (with the name of the instrument, so we know which ones people actually play rather than just open), whether a MIDI keyboard was connected, and when a recording is downloaded (with its length in seconds).
It never records what you play. No notes, no keystrokes, no audio and no recording is ever sent anywhere. “A note sounded on the marimba” is the whole of it: never which note, or when, or what you played next. Your performances never leave your browser, as described above.
HitJam in ChatGPT
HitJam also runs as a plugin inside ChatGPT, served from plugin.hitjam.io. When ChatGPT uses it, ChatGPT sends our server only what it needs to draw the piano: the name of a chord or scale (such as “Cm7”), a list of notes, or which of our songs to teach and with which hand. We never receive your conversation, your name or your ChatGPT account, and we don't store what was asked.
The piano inside ChatGPT works like this site: the sound is made on your device, and nothing you play is sent to us. It runs no analytics and shows no ads. Cloudflare, which hosts the plugin, may keep short-lived technical request logs (such as times and IP addresses) for security and debugging. Your use of ChatGPT itself is covered by OpenAI's privacy policy.
